Norway 2014

Welcome to Norway

Host families welcome their guests at Bekkestua Train Station.

Ferry trip at the Oslo fjord

The Oslo Fjord, although they were not impressively high, showed a truly remarkable landscape. At the end of the trip we arrived to Oscarborg (the fortress of King Oscar) famous for sinking the German ship Blücher in 1940 at the Battle of  Drøbak Sound. The loss of Blücher caused the German force to withdraw, but Airborne troops captured the Fornebu Airport and completed the encirclement of the city.

Norwegian Constitution Day

The 17th May is a very special day for Norwegians because their constitution was signed in 1814 by the Norwegian Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll. 2014 is even more special because is the 200th anniversary.

People get dressed in traditional costumes that are really spectacular. A noteworthy aspect of the Norwegian Constitution Day is its non-military nature. All over Norway, children's parades with marching bands and a lot of flags are the central elements of the celebration. In Oslo, children coming from many different schools gather to parade by the Royal Palace, where they exchange waves and greetings with the Royal Family.

We have learned many things about the national history of Norway as for example that the constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom in an attempt to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark–Norway's devastating defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. Also that Oslo was renamed Christiana after being destroyer in a fire in 1624, in honour of King Christian IV. In 1925 its original Norwegian name was restored.

Ringstabekk Skole

Students make regular class with their partners, they made a presentation of the artists of their country and they worked on a common art project. The art project was displayed in a social night at the school with host families.

Students and teachers had the opportunity to learn about  the Norwegian educational system and compare the differences between our schools: timetables, rules, student behaviour, cell phone ruling rules, class work.... Both schools headmasters had a meeting where they talked about the insights of both schools.

Sightseeing tour in Oslo

The sightseeing tour of the city of Oslo allowed us to know parts of the city that we really wanted to visit since we had been working on them in class, such as the Vigeland Park, a green area of 32 hectares, with 214 sculptures made from human bodies. The most famous work of Vigeland is The angry boy and The Monolith with 121 human figures. Later on we visited the Opera House, landmark of the city of Oslo for its architecture. Finally the National Gallery where we saw works of many painters, but what we all expected was E. Munch's scream. We were really shocked by the touch of Munch, so alive.
